Want to know the best things to do in Copenhagen when you’re visiting Denmark as a solo traveler? Check out my list below for some great ideas.

If you’re planning a trip to Copenhagen, Denmark, you may be overwhelmed with all of the options of things to do. In this post, I’m going to share with you the top 10 things to do in Copenhagen alone!

Copenhagen is one of my favorite cities in the world, though I may be a bit biased. I grew up in a very Danish household here in Canada, so when I got to Copenhagen for the first time finally, I felt very at home since everything was reminiscent of how I was raised. Now when I’m not in Denmark, I actually get a little bit of homesickness from there since I love it so much!

When you begin looking into what to see in Copenhagen, you’ll notice there are a lot of options that you may already know about, such as Nyhavn, which is one of the more popular tourist destinations.

This list will have popular options like that, but I will also share with you my own little Copenhagen travel guide to some lesser-known options to check out for solo travelers! This list also includes some great free things to do in Copenhagen as well.

10 Things To Do In Copenhagen Alone

Tivoli Gardens

Gardens at Tivoli Copenhagen

I haven’t been to Tivoli gardens since 2008, but of course, it is on this list! Tivoli is an amusement park and garden in Copenhagen. There are rides, booths, events, live music, and beautiful gardens to walk through when you are there.

This attraction has something for all ages and will not leave you disappointed. There are restaurants at Tivoli as well for you to try out on your trip here. You can learn more about Tivoli Denmark and look into Tivoli Gardens tickets at their website here.

Kronborg Slot (Hamlet’s Castle)

Kronborg Castle in Denmark

This castle is known worldwide thanks to Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. Kronborg Castle is located on the island Sjælland “Zealand”. It was the first castle I ever saw, and it is beautiful with a wealth of history. You can arrange to have a Kronborg castle tour, or you can explore the castle on your own.

Be sure to set aside a few hours because it really is a wonderful place to see with so much history. You can find out the Kronborg Castle hours and buy your Kronborg Castle tickets on their website here.

Nyhavn Copenhagen

Nyhavn Copenhagen Denmark

This should be on any list about things to do in Copenhagen. Nyhavn is a very popular tourist destination in Copenhagen and is very centrally located to many of the main attractions. It is safe to advise one to set off an entire day just to explore the area and everything in the vicinity.

From here you can also arrange to go on a Nyhavn canal tour which is a great way to see Copenhagen from a different angle. During the Christmas season, there is also a Nyhavn Christmas market which is so cute and a must-see! There are some Nyhavn hotels that you can check out if you want to stay in the area too, as well as many Nyhavn restaurant options.

The Little Mermaid Statue

The Little Mermaid statue in Denmark

Before my first trip to Denmark, I was determined to see the Little Mermaid statue which is an homage to Hans Christian Andersen. I was warned that it would be underwhelming but that did not deter me.

Once I finally saw it, I realized it really is quite small, but that didn’t bother me at all. It was the meaning behind the statue that I went for, and of course, I made sure to get my photo taken with her as did many other tourists. This is one of the many free things to do in Copenhagen!

Vor Frelsers Kirke “Church of our Saviour”

Our Saviour's Church Copenhagen

This Danish church has been one of the best attractions for me. My Mom and I came here a few years ago and I made it to the very top, while my mom made it (hardly) to the platform before turning and heading back down. She’s not one for heights. I found it so exhilarating to be rewarded with such a beautiful view after such a long climb up.

The interior of the church is also beautiful and worth a look around. Hands down, this church is one of my favorite places in Copenhagen and I highly recommend the climb to the top for one of the best views in Copenhagen!

Strøget Copenhagen

Strøget shopping Copenhagen

Strøget is the pedestrian walking street in Copenhagen. At 1.1km it is one of the longest in the world. With beautiful stores such as Royal Copenhagen and Georg Jensen, it’s easy to spend a majority of your day strolling up the street window shopping. It’s actually one of my favorite places for Copenhagen shopping when I’m in the city.

The architecture surrounding you is beautiful and I find the people working in the shops to always be very friendly. This photo was taken from the top floor of Royal Copenhagen. I highly advise checking out this Copenhagen shopping street.

Amalienborg Palace

Amalienborg Castle Copenhagen
Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen

Amalienborg Palace is where the Royal Family lives primarily. They are more contemporary looking than most of the other castles in Copenhagen but are still very interesting and beautiful. They are located close to other main attractions such as Strøget, Marmorkirken, and Nyhavn, so it is worth your while to go have a look. An event I highly suggest watching is the exchange of the guards.

One of these four castles is actually the Amalienborg Museum, where you can go in and see some of the royal artifacts and you get to see what the inside of the royal Copenhagen Palace looks like. Amalienborg Slot is really worth the visit. You can learn more about Amalienborg Castle and check out ticket prices and hours on their website here.

Marmorkirken “Marble Church”

Marmorkirken Copenhagen
Marmorkirken Copenhagen

This is one of my favorite pieces of architecture in Copenhagen. It is made of marble (hence the name) and it is massive and beautiful. The exterior is big and strong, with a beautiful copper green roof and gold painted lines pulling your eye down the structure to the inviting entrance.

The interior is grand and rich in color. It is a calming environment and a great place to reflect when you’re in the area. It is just up the road from Amalienborg Palace, and you can even have a bird’s eye view if you take the tour to the top of the church. (Check the photo from the Amalienborg point above). You can buy tickets to climb to the top of the church, but going in to look around the building itself is free!

Rosenborg Slot

Rosenborg Castle Copenhagen
Rosenborg Castle Copenhagen Denmark

Rosenborg Castle is charming, old, and in the heart of Copenhagen! It is worth it to take the tour through (Note: if you want to take pictures, you will need to pay for photo opportunities). You can get your Rosenborg Castle tickets here.

The royal jewels are kept here and you are able to see them as you journey through the historic building. Another thing I recommend doing here is a picnic lunch. If you’re lucky enough to be around on a warm sunny day, pack a lunch and bring a good book and just relax on the castle grounds, as many locals do.

It is my favorite way to spend a day in Copenhagen, and if you just enjoy the Rosenborg Castle Gardens, it’s free! This is definitely one of my favorite castles in Copenhagen, and it’s so easy to spend the day here, especially if you combine checking out the Rosenborg Castle interior with a picnic in the Rosenborg Castle Gardens.

The Round Tower Copenhagen

I have only been to the Round Tower (Rundetaarn) once and I think that’s all I needed. I do recommend going at least once. The entire building leads you up on a ramp to reach the top and you are then rewarded with another bird’s eye view of Copenhagen from an entirely different angle. It is a very unique building known for its Copenhagen tower spiral.

It’s a beautiful building and piece of architecture, but you probably won’t have to spend too much time on your trip to Copenhagen here.
